Memphis – More Than Elvis And BBQ

Memphis has a long and rich musical history – from blues to jazz, to soul music and of course the “Birthplace of Rock n’ Roll” with hometown son Elvis Presley leading a revolution that changed our world forever. Elvis was the original punk-rocker and cemented the music legacy of Memphis. Barbeque is also king in Memphis being dubbed the “Barbequed Pork Capital of the World.” When you look at Memphis and dig a little deeper, there is so much more to this Southern gem of a city than barbecue and Elvis.

Memphis has more to offer than Elvis & BBQ. Find out some of the things you need to check out when you visit.

Music and history are the heart and soul of Memphis. Today, Memphis has transformed into a hotbed for young millennials who are flocking to this ever-changing community of hipster neighborhoods, a thriving food culture and one of the hottest indie-rock, hip-hop and rap music scenes in the country.

On This Podcast Episode:

We got the lowdown on all things Memphis with writer/blogger who runs the very popular “I Love Memphis” blog, Holly Whitfield and then chatted with native Memphian and musician Will Tucker about the Memphis vibes.

My co-host for the podcast is my husband, Jeff Game, a travel, and music journalist that’s always on the hunt for a good story to tell.

Keeping It Weird In Portland

The reason why the TV show Portlandia is so funny and seemingly so real is because they usually nail all the quirkiness, funkdom and all around awesome independent spirit that runs through Portland. It’s certainly not by chance that the phrase “Keep Portland Weird” is so ingrained into the fabric of this Pacific-Northwest gem of a city. Portland loves to let its freak fly, in all the best possible ways – and that’s a great thing to celebrate and a great way to live.

Find out all Portland has to offer.

On This Podcast Episode:

These days, Portland is also home to some of the best restaurants in the country, the craft beer capital of the world and they really love their pinball up in these neck of the woods. Portlanders are also fiercely proud of being one of the most diverse and accepting cities around.

They love their Portland Timbers soccer team and lovingly cheer on the “Rip City” Trailblazers in basketball. Portland is one of the cities that has a “small town” vibe, located in a thriving metropolis.

Even with all the funkiness and independent spirit, Portland is also a very beautiful city, surrounded and engulfed in lush nature for as far as your eyes can see.

Summer Reboot- We Won Honeymooning in Paris

We’re in full swing with our summer reboot bringing you one of our most popular episodes about honeymooning in Paris. While we’re on hiatus for a few weeks we’re bringing you some of our very best, most popular, and just great episodes for you to enjoy twice a week.

Paris is a magical place for a honeymoon and we're sharing all our tips to save money and afford a trip to this beautiful city.

Paris, The City of Love

It’s been three and a half years that we got married, and Jeff and I wanted to share our Paris trip with you. We went on what we lovingly call a “pre-honeymoon” before we got married, because, why not!

While you might count Paris out because it’s seemingly too expensive, we were able to travel to Paris for eight nights for just under $1500 total. While we didn’t stay at a charming 5-star hotel, we did rent a fantastic Airbnb rental in one of my favorite arrondissements. Paris’ neighborhoods are broken down into arrondissements, and each one has a little different flair. The 6th, 3rd, and 4th arrondissement are my favs.

How to Afford Paris

To start, we used airline miles to fly there and save on paying for bags. We got access to the Club Lounge with our Citi AAdvantage Credit Card, which was a nice perk. We negotiated with two different Airbnb rentals and ended up getting an apartment for 15% less than advertised, plus one free night. The total cost for our scrumptious apartment rental was 700 euros for eight nights.

We skipped many of the overpriced restaurants and opted for cute bistros with prix fixe menus. For breakfast, we found a local bakery that makes good jambon formage (ham and cheese) sandwiches, which cost us 6 euros total for both sandwiches. We splurged on a few outrageous dinners, and had to make a stop at my favorite steak frites restaurant, Le Relais de l’Entrecôte.

If you’re lucky enough to be there on the 1st Sunday of the month, you can get in free to many museums around Paris. That’s a huge saving on the wallet. Other than museums, just walking around and checking out the local culture is amusement enough.

On This Podcast Episode:

  • Travel writer, Jeff Game, and I dish all things Paris and why it was the perfect spot for our honeymoon
  • We talk about how we were able to afford Paris for under $1500
  • Learn about some of our favorite places to visit
  • Debunk the myth that Parisians are all “mean”

There’s been some bad news coming out of Paris this last year. I have to admit; the terrorist attacks can make you want to take it off your travel list. I urge you not to. It’s is a beautiful city, filled with so much wonder, that you must simply explore it. In my opinion, life is way too short to start second guessing adventures.

Get out there – explore – you can do it on any budget!
